Rules & Regs: Announcing ~Eoscorpiidae on Oct 10, 2007
The ~Paleoartists group is a relay for all the Deviants who are interested in the science of paleontology and the related branch of scientific illustration, palaeontography, vulgo "paleoart". The group is intended to represent artwork representing a broad range of prehistoric animals, not just dinosaurs.
_____________
Announcement:
avancna and Machaeroides have this very day started Eoscorpiidae, a club dedicated to obscure and unsung prehistoric creatures. It is a worthy effort in scientific divulgation and so it deserves all the support of Paleoartists being our first affiliate club. I can't but direct you to the club's very eloquent inception manifest for further information.

Wikipedia Project
For those who do not know, Wikipedia is an open-source online encyclopaedia, free and freely editable by all. Controversy about this bold approach abounds, but a recent study in Nature has shown that Wikipedia is nearly as accurate as the Encyclopaedia Britannica on scientific issues. Wikipedia works, and is going to be used as one of the main secondary sources of information for an awful lot of people.
Now, the Wikipedia's information on fossil vertebrates are generally in a patchy, inaccurate state, and is sorely in need of new articles, illustrations, and editing. I would encourage anyone who has an interest in making their knowledge of palaeontology useful to humanity to get involved in the Wikipedia. There are several things you could do, not necessarily involving a lot of work. Most genera are not covered at all, and even very short articles are better than nothing. In general, the articles are poorly illustrated, so uploading artwork would be a very valuable contribution.
For those more enthusiastic you could get involved in the debate about the taxonomy used on Wikipedia, and help/ hinder MattMart in his quest to standardise the taxonomy of all amniote entries User: Dinoguy2.
Even minor editing and proof-reading is sorely needed. The readability of Wikipedia's articles can be lacking.
A couple of links to get you started:
Talk: Dinosaur - The talk page for the dinosaur article. Very active and full of controversy.
User Talk: Dinoguy2 - Discuss and plot on Matt's amniote taxonomic standardisation project.
Wikipedia: WikiProject Tree of Life - the Wikipedia's Tree of Life Project

Rules and Regulations
Drawings are expected to be as accurate as possible -- no Jurassic Park, Disney's Dinosaur, Dinotopia (Books, Movie/TV series) or Walking with Dinosaurs/Prehistoric Beasts/Cavemen</b>-related art as this is just considered fan art. Also, no anime, fantasy (i.e. dragons, dinosaur-like fabricated creatures) or furry art.
You must have at least three original finished paleoart-related submissions in your own gallery to join, scraps won't be considered valid. You cannot join solely on the fact that you are a dinosaur fan, as you can on many other deviantART groups.
How to Join
1.) Drop a note to either moderator, nyctopterus/jconway or dracontes, with a link to the work in your gallery and what you would want as a "Favourite" on this group. Only one (1) favourite per person is allowed. That "Favourite" provides a readily available link to your page on Paleoartists so that others can go view your gallery.
2.) Once your "Favourite" has been added, you will be given the password and can then submit two of your own pieces into the gallery. We prefer that you have one that will be specifically for this gallery, but if can't do this you can use already existing submissions in your gallery. You will be able to submit here just as you would on your own gallery, but make sure to add your name to your work upon submission here.
3.) Add the group to your devWatch icons in your journal.
Entry Submission
For clarity's sake, entries to the gallery must have identification, as follows;
The title should be, "Scientific name by Artist", or "Scientific name" with the artist being included after the description. Those deviations that don't abide by this will be deleted. After all you'd want people to know you did that deviation.

UPDATES:
I've gone through and deleted images from people who are now inactive—the idea is that the images posted on this page advertise active paleoartist "deviants," but if they are no longer an active member this does not apply.
I've also gone through and edited other's submissions that were either too large or needed cleaning. If anyone disagrees to what I've done to their image, let me know.

RULES & REGS
The Paleoartists group is a relay for all the Deviants who are interested, [relatively] scientifically, in dinosaurs and paleoart, as well as to artists who actually draw paleoart. Drawings are expected to be as accurate as possible-- no Jurassic Park, Disney's Dinosaur, Dinotopia (Books, Movie/TV series) or Walking with Dinosaurs/Prehistoric Beasts/Cavemen-related art as this is just considered fan art. Also, no anime, fantasy (i.e. dragons, dinosaur-like fabricated creatures) or furry art.
For joining and submitting art on Paleoartists, follow these simple instructions:
1.) Drop a note to either Paleoartists, eorhythm/Hotherym, or nyctopterus with a link to the work in your gallery and what you would want as a "Favourite" on this group. The "Favourite" allows you to have a link to your page readily available on Paleoartists so that others can go view your gallery.
Note that this group is also not specific to just dinosaurs. We loves us some prehistoric fish and mammals, too.
IMPORTANT:
You must have at least three original finished paleoart-related submissions in your own gallery to join, scraps won't be considered valid. You cannot join solely on the fact that you are a dinosaur fan, as you can on many other deviantART groups.
Entry Submission: So it's clear for all club members entries to the gallery must have identification, as follows,
or in the title, "Scientific name by Artist", or in the description, "whateverblurb" including "by Artist" (The title is always "Scientific name").
Those deviations that don't abide by this will be deleted. After all you'd want people to know you did that deviation.
We're waiting for your entries.
_____________
PHOTO SUBMISSIONS
Paleoartists now accepts photographs of dinosaur and paleontological exhibitions from non-members. Photo's should be of scientific interest, i.e., skeletons and good quality sculptures, not just dinosaur themed .
Please send submissions to: devpaleoartists@yahoo.com
You will of course get full credit in the description.

FOR VISITORS: Just browse the Favourites gallery of the Paleoartists group and you'll find the link to the galleries of the members.

How to Join
1.) Drop a note to either Paleoartists, nyctopterus/jconway or dracontes with a link to the work in your gallery and what you would want as a "Favourite" on this group.
For clarity's sake, entries to the gallery must have identification, as follows;

Be sure to read the text below twice. If you have any questions or suggestions about the rules, feel free to drop a group note with the pertinent subject.
Joining Process
:bulletred: Go over your gallery and select three (3) finished deviations clearly in theme with palaeontography and with different subject matters. These works can be clean line art and shaded or colored drawings in any style that doesn't distort anatomy. Clicking the "Join Us" button on the group profile a comment prompt will appear. Place there the links to the deviations you chose.
:bulletblue: Requests not abiding to the above will be summarily declined.

This list will be expanded as time allows. If you know of any we didnt mention feel free to send a note with the pertinent subject.
Research is an important part of part of doing and getting palaeontological reconstruction as right as it can be or of bolstering your own notions. Palaeontographical Cheat Sheet
As much of the primary literature and the specialized secondary literature is inaccessible to most deviants this blog post will distill the current knowledge in a cheat sheet of sorts to help interested people to hone their skills and knowledge. This will be updated as new finds and time allows.
Feel free to point out mistakes and propose additions. We would like them to be referenced though.
Introduction
In palaeontography, the stance is one not unlike that of palaeontological studies in that a pertinently themed illustration is a series of hypothesis/predictions about extinct biota, though conveyed solely in a visual medium. As such, res
Replacing Submissions
I've found a rather straight-forward and not too highlighted method for members that, having filled their quota of deviations, would after a time want to remove any number of them to substitute the pertinent pieces, at their leisure, with newer and better work.
:bulletgreen: Go to a deviation you've submitted to the Group and want to remove from it. Click the "Edit Deviation" button.
:bulletgreen: On the "Edit Deviation" page you'll find just under "Category" the Groups where your deviation is currently displayed with a remove button (a white "X" on a red circle) beside each instance.
